How To Take Care of Your Engagement Ring

Your Precious New Ring Is Made To Last

We believe your ring should be worn and cherished daily, which is why we recommend regular maintenance to keep it in perfect condition.

While your ring is made from solid gold or platinum and expertly crafted, it is still delicate.

Proper care and attention will keep your ring safe and looking its best. In this guide, we share essential tips and best practices for cleaning, storing and maintaining your ring for a lifetime.

Expert Tips

Always take your ring off when doing hands-on activities, working out or going swimming.

Clean your ring with a soft toothbrush and soapy water, or bring it to us for a complimentary ultrasonic clean.

Always store your ring somewhere safe like in your ring box when you’re not wearing it.

All of our rings come with a lifetime manufacturing warranty, so rest assured your ring will last a lifetime.

How To Clean Your Engagement Ring

There are a few ways you can keep your engagement ring clean and sparkly. We recommend cleaning your ring once every few months depending on your lifestyle.

Using a soft toothbrush and a bowl of warm water mixed with gentle dish soap, soak your engagement ring in the mixture for a few minutes before giving it a gentle scrub. The key is to be gentle to avoid scratching the metal.

Make sure to get behind the prongs and the back of the stone as this is where the most dirt buildup happens! Once your ring is clean, rinse it under running water and let it air dry, or wipe it down with a lint-free cloth. You can also give it a quick polish with the complimentary polishing cloth included with your ring.

Tip: If you notice the stone is loose, avoid scrubbing it and bring it to your nearest showroom for assessment instead!

At Cullen Jewellery, we love aftercare. That’s why we offer lifetime complimentary ultrasonic cleaning for any ring purchased from us. This service is available via a quick 15-minute drop-off appointment and is done on the spot, so you can have your beautiful ring back looking nice and sparkly without having to wait weeks.

Ultrasonic cleaning is a process that uses high-frequency sonic waves to gently lift and remove dirt, grime, and contaminants from your precious jewellery and is usually more effective than just scrubbing. It can be done as frequently as necessary, but your sales consultant will always check to make sure no stones are loose before proceeding!

Tip: If you don’t have time to arrange a full polish before your wedding or engagement party, this is a great way to give your engagement ring a quick refresher and get it clean again!

When To Take Off Your Ring

While we understand you never want to take off your beautiful ring, certain activities can be damaging if it's worn. Here are some recommendations on when to take off your ring!

Heavy Physical Labour

We recommend taking off your ring while performing any activity that involves contact, including lifting weights or boxing! Activities that require you to grip something with force, including heavy grocery bags, can damage the metal of your ring over time, and can eventually cause your band to warp or snap through repeated strain.

Swimming

This includes the beach, the pool or the hot tub! Chlorine can not only leave residue on your stone, adding grime and dulling its sparkle but it can also weaken the metal of your ring, causing discolouration and the prongs to potentially loosen.

Furthermore, cold water can also cause your fingers to shrink temporarily, increasing the risk of your ring falling off and getting lost!

Household Chores

When doing housework such as cleaning, gardening or cooking, it’s important to take care of your ring! Some cleaning products contain harsh chemicals that can discolour your ring over time, while other activities may leave dirt and residue build-up around your stone. Also, any hands-on activity may result in your ring getting caught, snagged or hit, so always be mindful if you decide to keep it on!

Sleeping

While not necessarily dangerous to wear to bed, your ring may get caught or snagged on bed sheets, hair, or clothing overnight, potentially damaging or loosening its prongs.

Pro Tip: Always make sure to keep your ring in a safe place when you’re not wearing it. We recommend storing it in your Cullen Jewellery pouch or ring box and leaving it somewhere that is easy to remember!

No, it's generally not recommended. Soap, shampoo, and conditioner can leave a filmy residue on the stone, reducing its sparkle, and potentially loosening the stone.

While diamond and moissanite are durable, we recommend removing your ring while swimming, exercising, cleaning, cooking, and gardening to protect it from chemicals and physical damage.

It depends on the activity. High-contact exercises pose a risk of damage. For gentler exercises like running or cycling, it's safer, but we advise caution.

We recommend removing your ring for activities like exercising, swimming, cooking, cleaning, gardening, and sleeping for its safety.

Store your ring in a safe, memorable place, preferably in its own fabric-lined case, ring pouch, or box to avoid scratches or damage.

Yes, at least once a year for a deep clean and to check for any loose stones or damage for regular maintenance.

Regular cleaning is recommended to maintain its sparkle. Gentle soap and warm water are sufficient for most cleanings.
