The Right Way to Pair Wedding Bands with Engagement Rings
So, you’ve picked out your wedding ring, ensuring it perfectly complements your engagement ring. Now the question is how to wear your stack. What goes first - wedding band or engagement ring?
And the answer is: “There is no one answer!” Depending on your culture, sense of tradition, ring style, or just personal preference, your engagement and wedding ring set can be worn together, apart, on different hands and fingers, or stacked in a multitude of ways.
That being said, if you’re after some jewellery guidance on how to best wear your engagement ring and wedding band together, or apart, read on for the most common combinations.
Option 1: Wedding band first and engagement ring on top
In the West, the most common way to wear an engagement ring and wedding band is to wear a wedding band first and an engagement ring on top. This tradition stems from the belief that the wedding band, symbolising your wedding vows, should be worn closest to the heart.
This classic stack emphasises the engagement ring - perfect if your main goal is to accentuate your sparkler. That said, this combination comes with one little problem: on your wedding day, you may need to remove your engagement ring before the ceremony or move it to your other hand, so the wedding band can be placed correctly during your vows.
Option 2: Engagement ring first and wedding band on top
Some prefer to wear their rings in the order they received them, which puts their engagement ring first and their wedding band on top, whether that’s on their left ring finger, their right ring finger, or other!
This order reflects the journey of a couple's relationship—where the engagement ring marks the promise of marriage, and the wedding ring symbolises their lasting commitment after wedding vows are exchanged.
Option 3: Engagement ring and wedding band on different fingers
In many cultures, engagement rings and wedding bands are traditionally worn on the right hand. However, some couples mix it up to celebrate their individuality, or combined heritage, choosing to wear their rings on different hands and fingers.
A notable example: Hailey Bieber famously transformed her original engagement ring into a pinky ring on her right hand after Justin Bieber upgraded her engagement ring with an 18-carat diamond ring worth over $1 million.
If you love sparkle, like Hailey, you might find it fun to spread the bling across all fingers!
