What is an IGI Certificate?

— by Cullen Jewellery — Reading time 2 minutes

When choosing a diamond for an engagement ring, much of the attention goes to what can be seen: shape, size and sparkle. Yet behind every diamond sits another layer of information that helps explain its qualities. Diamond certification provides this detail, offering an independent record of a stone’s cut, colour and clarity. You may have heard that diamonds are graded and come with a certificate, but what does that mean for lab grown diamonds? A lab grown diamond certificate is an independent report from a third-party gem laboratory that confirms the key characteristics of the stone. It provides a clear and reliable way to understand what you are purchasing and to compare diamonds with confidence.

What is Lab Grown Diamond Certification?

A diamond certificate is created by an independent laboratory with no involvement in the sale of the stone. Using specialised equipment, expert gemologists examine the diamond carefully, often under magnification, measuring its proportions and evaluating its optical characteristics. Their findings are compiled into a formal report. This report outlines the attributes commonly referred to as the four Cs: cut, colour, clarity and carat weight. Together, these characteristics describe the visual quality and structure of the diamond. For lab grown diamonds, certification provides a clear and consistent framework for understanding these qualities, helping clients compare stones accurately and select with confidence.

What is Igi Certification?

Most lab grown diamonds are certified by the International Gemological Institute (IGI). The IGI is one of the most widely recognised laboratories grading lab grown diamonds today, and its reports provide detailed assessments across the four Cs. Because the majority of lab grown diamonds are evaluated by the IGI, its grading system has become the most common reference point within the lab grown diamond market. This consistency makes it easier for clients to compare diamonds across different jewellers, ensuring the specifications described on a certificate correspond reliably to the stone itself.

What About Gia Certification?

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is widely regarded as the global authority in diamond grading, particularly within the natural diamond industry. For decades, GIA reports have set the benchmark for consistency and precision in grading mined diamonds. In recent years, the GIA has begun issuing reports for lab grown diamonds as well. However, the organisation’s primary focus remains on natural diamonds, and as a result, comparatively few lab grown diamonds currently carry a GIA certificate. Most lab grown stones available today are therefore graded by the IGI. For this reason, IGI certification has become the most familiar and practical reference when comparing lab grown diamonds. At Cullen, the majority of our lab grown diamonds are accompanied by an IGI Laboratory Grown Diamond Report, providing a clear record of the stone’s characteristics.

Understanding Your Diamond

Each IGI-certified lab grown diamond is also laser-inscribed with its report number and the words “lab grown.” This microscopic inscription is placed on the girdle of the diamond and can only be seen with a jeweller’s loupe. It does not affect the diamond’s appearance or light performance, but offers an additional layer of traceability and reassurance. Ultimately, certification is about transparency. It ensures that the diamond you choose is clearly understood, carefully documented, and exactly what it claims to be – allowing you to select your stone with ultimate confidence.
