Does Moissanite Look Fake?

— by Cullen Jewellery — Reading time 3 minutes

Moissanite is often discussed in comparison to diamonds. In that context, it can be dismissed as a substitute – a “look-alike” rather than a gemstone in its own right. But that framing misses what makes moissanite compelling. It isn’t an imitation. It’s a distinct stone with its own optical signature, personality, and appeal. So does moissanite look fake? The short answer is no. The more nuanced answer is that it looks different – and for many, that difference is exactly the point.

A Different Kind of Sparkle

Moissanite is known for its exceptional brilliance and fire. With a higher refractive index (2.65–2.69) than diamond (2.42), it bends and reflects light more intensely. Where diamonds often return cooler, whiter flashes, moissanite disperses light into more colourful tones. This is sometimes described as “extra sparkle,” but it isn’t harsh or overpowering. In everyday wear, moissanite appears bright, refined, and luminous. In stronger light like sunlight or evening lighting, it can reveal subtle rainbow flashes across the surface of the stone. For many, this liveliness is part of its appeal – vibrant and expressive.

How Moissanite Appears in Different Lighting

Because of its optical structure, moissanite can respond more noticeably to changes in lighting. In most conditions, a colourless moissanite appears just that: colourless. Under certain angles or brighter light sources, faint coloured overtones may appear. These shifts are typically subtle and often most noticeable to the wearer, who experiences the stone throughout the day in varied environments. To others, the difference is minimal. What’s perceived isn’t “fake,” but dynamic. A gemstone that interacts with light rather than remaining visually static.

Coloured Moissanite as a Design Choice

Moissanite also offers flexibility beyond traditional colour expectations. Through specialised treatments, stones can be produced in a range of hues, including green, blue, grey, yellow, and champagne. These colours are durable and designed to last, offering a creative alternative to natural gemstone limitations. For those drawn to individuality or jewellery that feels less conventional, coloured moissanite opens up design possibilities that feel personal, expressive, and modern.

Beauty Without Excess

One of moissanite’s quiet strengths is its accessibility. It makes room for larger centre stones and intricate details, such as pavé or halo settings, without the cost rising sharply. Jewellery is ultimately about how a piece feels to wear, how it fits into your life, and how it marks a meaningful moment. Moissanite makes it possible to prioritise proportion, design, and aesthetic impact without compromise. Moissanite doesn’t look fake. It looks like moissanite – luminous, considered and full of character. When chosen thoughtfully and crafted with care, it becomes what fine jewellery should always be: something you wear with confidence, for years to come.
