All about Bezel-Set Engagement Rings

While certainly not the most commonly seen engagement ring trend, bezel-set engagement rings are fast rising the ranks thanks to its ability to make even the most classic and simple cut stand out in a sea of regular-smegular styles. The bezel setting involves the metal of the band enveloping up around the sides of the centre stone. This isn’t to be confused with a cigar band where the centre stone (or stones) are set into a thicker band – a great option for those looking to stack a few rings together. As for bezel-set rings, we have a full guide to help decide whether it might be for you.

Which cuts look best in a bezel setting?

At Cullen Jewellery we have bezel-set rings in all kinds of cuts and styles, some with one centre stone, some with multiple for an eclectic look. As for which stones look best , there’s no clear winner. Bezel-set stones can however exaggerate the beauty of more unique settings, like our Olive East West Emerald Bezel Cut Ring with a Cathedral Setting . In the face, this emerald bezel ring is bold, clean and chunky - and underneath the brightness of the stone is exposed in a dramatic cathedral setting.

Is a bezel setting secure?

Bezel settings have metal that envelopes all edges of the stone, so it is considered one of if not the most secure settings for engagement rings. though if a ring is made well even a minimal six-prong setting should still be durable. Some bezel settings are thicker than others. While you may be leaning towards a bezel-set diamond ring for a number of reasons – there’s no need for it to be thick and bold if that doesn’t match your aesthetic. Our Rachel Bezel Set Radiant Solitaire is a perfect example of a thick bezel setting, whereas the Imani Bezel Set Emerald Solitaire has a thinner border of metal around the stone, still with the beauty of the bezel setting in a more subtle style.

What is a half bezel setting?

Those who like the beauty of the smooth lines of a bezel setting but aren’t able to fully commit to the style might favour a half-bezel setting. In this setting, the edges of metal still envelope over the edges of the centre stone, but only over two opposite sides of the stone – hence the half. The Jodie Emerald Half Bezel Solitaire is the perfect example of how the half-bezel is the best of both worlds. Emerald cut stones have beautiful clean cut edges, with the longer side not something you’d cover up. In this case, these long edges are exposed, while the shorter edges are covered in the metal – exaggerating the beauty and sparkle of the stone. Does a bezel reduce sparkle? It’s a common question, and a valid one. But the answer can be seen in half-bezel settings. If anything, a bezel setting can emphasise the beauty of the sparkle of a stone - whether moissanite, lab-grown diamond or sapphire.

Are bezel settings more expensive?

Bezel settings may cost marginally more than a four or six-prong setting as more metal is inevitably used, and engagement rings from any brand or jewellery takes into account the amount of material used. That said, if you’re looking for an overall bigger look, a bezel setting can exaggerate the size of your centre stone, and so it could be an investment well worth making.

When it comes down to choosing a jeweller to make your engagement ring, it’s worth considering that the cheapest option may not be the worst, and the most expensive option may not be the best. Instead, be sure your jeweller is able to give you the full background on your ring, stones and their supply chain. At Cullen Jewellery, we make all of this information public in our Impact Report .
