Wondering What to Expect? Our Most-asked Ring Consult Questions
— by Cullen Jewellery — Reading time 3 minutes
Shopping for an engagement ring is a one-of-a-kind adventure. There are butterflies, questions, and plenty of decisions – all at once. It all begins with your first ring consult: a dedicated block of time where you can explore at your own pace. It’s a moment to try on rings, gather inspiration, and daydream about your big day. To help you make the most of it, our ring consultant Ava shares answers to 12 of the questions she hears most often. Think of this as a conversation – clear, thoughtful guidance from people who do this every day, but always with your story at heart. Our goal is to make the journey seamless, comfortable, and, above all, tailored to you.
1. Can I Bring My Partner With Me?
Absolutely! We actually recommend it. Having your partner there helps you both feel confident about the design and ensures we get their size right. Don’t worry – it doesn’t take away the surprise of when or how you propose. You don’t need to finalise anything on the day.
2. How Many People Can I Bring to My Appointment?
Our appointments are designed for you and one guest. If more than one person would like to be part of the experience (say, your partner and a parent), you’re welcome to book two separate appointments – that way, everyone gets the attention they deserve without feeling crowded.
3. I Don’t Know Their Ring Size. Can I Still Come In?
Yes – absolutely. While it’s best to have the closest possible size, don’t worry if you’re unsure. During your consult, we’ll share clever tips and tricks to estimate. When it comes to placing an order, size does matter because resizing has its limits. Plain bands can usually be adjusted up to around 5 sizes while bands with stones are typically safe within 2 sizes. Getting close the first time ensures the ring fits beautifully and protects its design for years to come.
4. Do You Have the Exact Ring I’ve Seen Online or on Instagram to Try On?
Often, yes – though not always. Core collection pieces are usually in the showroom, but some newer designs may not be on hand yet. If there’s a particular style you’re hoping to see, email us before your appointment so we can confirm availability or prepare alternatives.
5. Can I See Two Rings Together, Like an Engagement Ring With a Wedding Band?
Yes. If we have both rings in stock, we’ll pair them for you to try. If not, we’ll show you similar styles or share images from another showroom so you can still picture how the pieces work together.
6. Do You Create Custom Rings?
It’s our specialty! From subtle tweaks to fully bespoke designs, we love bringing your vision to life. The only limit is structural integrity – if something needs a little extra support to stay strong, we’ll suggest adjustments that achieve the look safely.
7. Can You Use My Heirloom or Family Stones?
We don’t set external stones. Because we can’t verify their history or integrity, working with them risks damage and would void our warranty.
8. What’s the Process of Ordering a Ring?
You’ll choose your design, centre stone, and ring size. From there, our jewellers craft your ring to order. The process takes around 45 business days, so it’s best to plan ahead – especially if you have a special date in mind.
9. Do I Need to Decide on the Day?
Not at all. Your appointment is about clarity and confidence. You’re welcome to take time, confirm the details, and move forward when you’re ready.
10. Do You Only Source Lab Diamonds?
Yes. We exclusively work with lab-grown diamonds and gemstones – a choice rooted in ethics, sustainability, and transparency.
11. What If I’m Running Late?
We understand things happen. Your appointment won’t be cancelled, but please note your time may be shorter, as each consult is booked for 45 minutes. Arriving on time helps you make the most of it.
12. Can My Partner and I Look at Wedding Bands in the Same Appointment?
Yes, if you’re shopping for wedding bands only. For engagement rings, we recommend booking a double appointment – there’s more ground to cover and this gives each of you a dedicated, personalised experience. You’ll still sit together, but both get the space to explore properly.
