How to Find Out Your Ring Size at Home

— by Cullen Jewellery — Reading time 4 minutes

Can’t figure out yours or your partner's ring size? Baffled by ring size charts? If you want to know how to measure your ring size at home, several methods are available, though some are more accurate than others. For the most precise results, we recommend booking an appointment today at one of our showrooms or arranging a virtual consultation to receive professional guidance. That said, if you would like to measure your ring size at home, read on for a breakdown of the best way to get that perfect size at home.

Some Things to Keep in Mind

There are a few caveats before proceeding with getting an accurate ring size reading at home. Firstly, your dominant hand is usually slightly larger than your other hand, so make sure to measure the right finger on the correct hand! Secondly, fingers tend to change in size throughout the day depending on temperature. We recommend measuring your finger at the end of the day and at an average body temperature. Lastly, if you have a larger knuckle, we recommend taking two measurements and selecting the size in between. Your ring must fit over your knuckle but not be too loose around your finger.

How to Find Your Ring Size Using a Ring Sizer

To find your ring size using a ring sizer, slip the ring sizer over your ring finger and pull it until it fits comfortably without being too tight. Ensure that you can still slide the sizer over your knuckle. Once it's in place, use the black arrow to determine your specific ring size from the measurements provided. Our complimentary ring sizer allows you to measure your ring size from the comfort of your own home.

How to Find a Ring Size Using an Old Ring

Another way to find your ring size is to find a ring you or your partner already own and bring that with you to your engagement or wedding ring consultation. Alternatively, you can trace the inside and outside circumference using pencil and paper for a virtual engagement or wedding ring consultation. Being located outside a metropolitan area is no obstacle to finding the perfect ring size! However, if you want to find someone else's ring size without them knowing, borrowing one of their existing rings is a great option. If you're concerned about them noticing their ring is missing, you can trace the inside of their ring onto a piece of paper and return it quickly. This will allow us to find out the inner diameter of their ring and give a rough estimate of their finger size.

Tip: If you're measuring for an engagement ring, choose a ring that your partner wears on their middle finger and be prepared to go down a few sizes.

How to Find Your Ring Size With a String

The string method involves wrapping a piece of string around your finger and measuring where the ends meet using a ruler. Take a piece of string or a strip of paper no wider than 1.4 cm. Wrap it around your finger and mark the spot where the ends overlap with a pen. Then lay the string or paper flat against a ruler to measure it. Please note that this is not the best method to obtain a ring size, and is only really recommended as a last resort if all the other options discussed here are not possible.

How to Convert Your International Ring Size

Similar to clothing sizes, ring sizes can vary between countries. In Australia, we use an alphabet-based sizing system. If you know your ring size from another country, you can use our Ring Size Conversion Calculator to find your ring size in your preferred country.
