The Beauty of Rose Gold Rings

2025 is shaping up to be the year of rose gold rings. At Cullen Jewellery, we have noticed a spike in custom rose gold engagement ring requests, as Millennials and Gen Z embrace its subtle beauty.

Rose gold, like red roses, love hearts, chocolate boxes, and pink sunsets, is associated with true romance. It is also one of the most versatile and durable gold alloys available. Its pinkish tone looks beautiful when paired with gemstones and can also be used to create juxtaposition in two-tone jewellery or an engagement ring stack à la Hailey Bieber.

Read on for our definitive report on this alluring precious metal.

The history of rose gold

Rose gold has a long and storied history. Originating in 19th century Imperial Russia, rose gold was first created by renowned jeweller, Carl Faberge. Carl was famous for his Faberge Eggs beloved by the Russian czars. By blending yellow gold and copper, Faberge created a striking pink metal that was first known as “Russian Gold”. However, as its popularity grew across the globe, it lost its Russian association and was renamed “rose gold”, in recognition of its blushing quality.

How to recognise authentic rose gold

Rose gold is a blend or alloy made from pure 24 karat yellow gold, copper, and silver. While pure 24 karat gold is the foundation of all gold jewellery, it is too soft to be used in its pure state. To strengthen and solidify pure gold, it must be alloyed with other metals. These different alloy compositions determine gold’s colour - in this case, a deep gold with hints of red. Thus, rose gold can be identified by its distinctive warm hue.

Lena is an elegant rose gold cushion solitaire with round stones and matching eagle claws.
Alexandria , a signature 6-claw pavé solitaire, features a round cut stone on a rose gold band with elevated claws.
Eve is notable for its timeless rose gold band and marquise stone set in a petal-like prong.

How rose gold is made

Rose gold is achieved by blending gold and copper and can range from a delicate pink to a rich crimson, depending on how much copper is added. However, true rose gold is crafted with around 75% gold, 22.5% copper, and a small touch of silver. The silver softens the boldness of the copper, giving rise to that signature pinkish colour that is so complimentary to diamonds, moissanite, and sapphires.
