A 360 of Elongated Cushion Cut Engagement Rings

You know the round, oval and emerald cut engagement rings, now is the time to explore the cuts for unique aesthetics. You may already be familiar with the cushion cut. For those who aren’t – think of this as a princess cut with rounded edges. Now imagine we stretched the cushion cut, creating long elegant edges – this is the elongated cushion cut. While this cut was popular in a vintage era, now it’s making a comeback – this is all you need to know.

Why are elongated cushion cut diamonds popular?

With the rise in elongated shapes such as ovals, marquise and radiants, there is a shape that combines the softer edges of the oval with the timeless elegance and sparkle of a radiant; the elongated cushion cut. This shape is perfect for those who want to elongate their fingers and hand, or for those that think the radiant to be too sharp or boxy. The elongated form of the stone blends excellent finger coverage with a fire and brilliance thanks to its 77 facets that perfectly aligns a modern look with vintage charm.

Comparing Elongated cushion and radiant cut diamonds

A similar shape that often can be grouped in with elongated cushions is the radiant cut diamond. With similarly deeply faceted appearances, the two can be distinguished by their edges. The radiant cut features a sharp, perfectly rectangle form while the elongated cushion showcases softer edges giving a more rounded look. While no shape is better than the other, elongated cushions offer a softer appearance that may be preferred. However, if the bolder distinct look of the radiant is appealing to you, you can read more about radiants here .

Are elongated cushion cut diamonds rare?

In the case of mined diamonds, elongated cushion cuts are rarer as they require a larger uncut stone to have enough surface area for the shape. At Cullen Jewellery we don’t need to worry about this limitation. All of our stones are lab-grown, giving you ample opportunity to find the engagement ring of your dreams – no matter how big or unique the shape might be.

The cushion cut is a popular shape to encounter when browsing vintage and antique engagement rings and diamonds. Before machinery was created to ensure accurate cuts, the cushion cut was relatively easy to measure by eye to cut by hand.

What is a cushion modified cut?

A cushion modified cut is a new take on the classic cushion cut, with additional facets (flat edges) used to cut the shape and creating a unique type of sparkle often called ‘crushed ice’. The crushed ice effect is smaller, scattered sparkles in what might appear a random formation – much like you’d expect from literal crushed ice. While all diamonds have a unique beauty, the crushed ice effect is certainly an acquired taste, with some preferring a brilliant cut stone which has an overall more methodic cut with fewer facets.

We do not specialise in the modified cushion cut but we do offer ‘crushed ice’ options for selected moissanite stones. The rainbow-coloured reflections of a moissanite stone lend itself to a crushed ice elongated cushion cut though to see the difference for yourself, we’d recommend an in-person, or virtual appointment.

Square vs elongated cushion cut?

Square cut rings, such as princess cut or asscher cut rings, are one of the classic engagement ring centre stone shapes. While square cuts reached their height of popularity in the 80s and 90s, now stones such as a pear cut, round cut and oval cut are favoured for their curves which create an overall softer, more feminine look.

The elongated cushion cut is the best of both worlds. While it has the same structure and stance as a square cut, it has similar beautiful curved, rounded edges to those more popular styles. The range of elongated cushion cut desings at Cullen Jewellery is extensive. We have fun bezel-cut elongated cushion cuts like the Billie to something glamourous like the Meghan Cushion Trilogy with Pavé Diamonds . For something unique while still having the skeleton of a classic style, the Helena Elongated Cushion Solitaire with Triple-Split Claws has a beautiful elongated cushion cut centre stone with distinct claws on all four corners. While this bold ring isn't to everyone's taste, it’s a great example of using this well-loved cut in a new way for modern wearers.

Summary

Engagement rings are unique in that there’s no real classics, and no real trends – each style and aesthetic remains relevant to those who love it. As for the elongated cushion cut, it has stood the test of time due to its ability to beautifully fill the mould of any aesthetic.
