POV: You’re Obsessed with Selena Gomez’s Engagement Ring

Marquise is officially the diamond shape of 2025, thanks to Selena Gomez’s “Instagram official” post

declaring herself engaged with a 6 carat marquise diamond ring.

The dazzling engagement ring, given by Selena’s then-boyfriend-now-fiancé, Benny Blanco, couldn’t be more perfect for the Rare Beauty founder and entertainer who sang, “I’m on my marquise diamonds / I'm a marquise diamond / Could even make that Tiffany jealous”.

A true rare beauty, Selena’s marquise diamond is set with six claws atop a dazzling yellow gold pavé band composed of small oval diamonds.

“The rarified marquise shape creates the illusion of a larger diamond and elongates the finger, perfect for Selena’s many red carpet moments,” notes fine jewellery expert, Juliette, who runs a live FAQ on the Cullen Jewellery Instagram

page every Thursday.

The Finer Details

The marquise diamond dates back to the 18th century when it was commissioned by Louis XV to mimic the shape of Madame de Pompadour’s lips. Its elegant and elongated silhouette has made it a timeless favourite ever since.

While the marquise cut has always held its charm, it experienced a significant resurgence in the 1960s and ’70s, largely thanks to Jackie Kennedy. She was gifted a remarkable 40-carat marquise-cut diamond ring by Aristotle Onassis, known as the Lesotho III. This extraordinary piece later sold at auction for an impressive $2.59 million.

“Selena is to marquise diamonds in 2025 as Jackie Kennedy was in 1968,” says Juliette. “We’ve seen a notable rise in requests for marquise rings in our showrooms, and for the first time in years, they’re just as popular as round and oval gemstones.”

Couples are increasingly seeking something unique, and the marquise diamond offers exactly that. “Only about 5% of diamonds sold are marquise, making it one of the rarer shapes,” Juliette adds.

Beyond its exclusivity, the marquise cut offers incredible value. Its elongated shape creates the illusion of a larger stone, with many estimating its carat weight to be more substantial than it actually is. “The marquise is a stunning choice for those looking to make a statement.”

Who Suits a Marquise Diamond Ring?

The marquise shape is not necessarily the best choice for every bride. “Except for bezel settings, marquise diamonds are vulnerable to knocks and bumps at the points and may not be suitable for brides-to-be who lead active lifestyles or work in hands-on frontline roles. We recommend taking extra care when wearing a marquise ring, and taking it off and storing it away safely before any strenuous activities, such as playing sports.”

Nevertheless, for many, the glamour and unique appearance of a marquise diamond far outweigh the negatives.

“The marquise shape suits every available ring setting, from a classic solitaire to toi et moi, and even our more unconventional styles such as an East West setting.”
